According to Companies House, it’s a year since I incorporated this company. Happy Birthday to Annabel Fay Consulting!
It was 13th February 2019. I was still employed full time at Salesforce, my overdraft was full of Topshop and Starbucks, and I had no idea why I’d set up a company. I had this flicker at the back of my mind that self-employment would be my next move, and that light wouldn’t go out.
So I created the company, and sat on it for 8 months. I closed the stupid overdraft and my husband and I squirreled money away. My contract with Salesforce forbade me from doing any #sidehustle work, and in the field I work in everybody knows everybody, so I really couldn’t risk it.
So for 8 months, I planned. I worked out where I could really make a difference. I paid attention to my passions. I wrote business plans, I sussed out people’s appetite for my services, I took a course on how to be a freelancer, and I read everything I could get my hands on.
I finally took the leap and handed in my notice on September 30th, 2019. My first day of trading was Halloween. Good job I’m not superstitious.
Since then it’s been the most incredible rollercoaster and I love it every single day. I love simplifying marketing and steering companies in the right direction. I love selling- which I didn’t think I’d like at all. I love writing, I love strategising, and I love hanging out with different cool people every day.
On that note, as the demand for my services has grown beyond what I ever imagined, I’m on the lookout for other freelancers. If you’re an awesome Tech writer, content marketer or campaign manager who’s up for some freelance work, let me know. I’m not sure whether or not I’ll expand just yet, but I’d like to at least know some people if the growth continues the way it has.
I probably won’t spend 8 months planning this one, but I do like to think ahead!
